I went to Monument Valley with my good friend Jackie in February a few years ago. As photographers we had high hopes of fiery sunsets and sunrises. Because it was winter we hoped for snow to create contrast on the red sand landscape. We got neither. Instead we got caught in this massive windstorm. We were pelted with sand in the face. Initially we tried to bear it but eventually we were worried about sand getting into and damaging our cameras so we quickly retreated to the safety of our hotel.

Once inside we were a bit downtrodden, feeling defeated. It was a long drive to Monument Valley from where we lived and to have the weather turn on us like this felt unfair. But as often as the case is, we realized we could still photograph with our long lenses from the balcony of our room. Joy erupted and we got back to the happy work in front of us. This image is one of my favorites of the day.

It reminds me that something wonderful can come to pass even if a situation feels hopeless or turns into something you had not wanted. The reality of life is that often when we set out on an adventure or into uncharted territory it doesn't go to plan. More often than not, we don't get what we want but that doesn't mean we can't get something wonderful from the day anyway.
